Chicken is the protein most dogs have already eaten a thousand times over, so this recipe's job in James Wellbeloved's range is less about introducing something exotic and more about offering a like-for-like alternative to a supermarket kibble, minus the ingredients some dogs react to.

Dried chicken protein leads the recipe at 21.5%, alongside naked oats, barley, and brown and white rice. It is a complete food for adult dogs, and James Wellbeloved's stated approach across the range is to exclude beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat.

• Complete food for adult dogs, built on chicken as the named protein
• Protein 22.7%, fat 11.6%, crude ash 5.9%, crude fibre 3.0%
• Omega-3 at 1.2%, omega-6 at 3.0%
• Energy 364 kcal per 100g
• Feeding chart splits the daily amount by activity level
• 2KG bag

On what "hypoallergenic" means here. Chicken is one of the more common food sensitivities in dogs, so a "hypoallergenic" recipe built on chicken can sound like a contradiction. What James Wellbeloved mean by it is single-source and free of the other common allergens — beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat — not that chicken itself can't cause a reaction. If your dog's known issue is chicken specifically, this is not the recipe to reach for. James Wellbeloved's own chart splits portions by activity level: a 10kg dog doing up to an hour of moderate activity a day gets 145-160g, rising to 170-185g for one doing one to three hours.

Who it's for: owners who want a hypoallergenic-format food without moving to an unfamiliar protein, and whose dog's sensitivity — if there is one — has already been confirmed as something other than chicken.
