On which dog this suits
8mm is a fine rope and Hemm and Boo name spaniels, which is a size and a temperament rather than just a breed. A dog who hauls puts all of that pull through a narrow band of rope, so this is the wrong lead for a puller and the wrong lead to learn loose-lead walking on. Nothing is published about where the slider stops either, so set it yourself with the dog standing calmly before you rely on it, and treat a slip lead as a walking lead rather than something to tie a dog up with. The rope thickness is also the only dimension Hemm and Boo describe in words to us: the finished length reaches us as a size code on the box and nowhere else.
Why we chose it
The leather tabs are why this one is on the shelf instead of a plain rope, because stitched full grain sits on the part of a slip lead that takes all the wear. The figure 8 halter option means it covers two jobs for one price. It is also light and it coils flat, so it is cheap to post.

Size guide & how to measure
Leads are chosen by length and width rather than your pet’s body size. Pick the width to suit your pet’s strength and the length to suit how you walk.
How to measure
- Width: lighter, narrower webbing for small dogs; wider, thicker webbing for strong pullers and larger dogs.
- Standard lead (1.2–1.5 m): everyday pavement walks and training.
- Long line (3–10 m): recall practice and open spaces.
- Short / traffic lead (under 1 m): close control in busy areas.
| Length | Best for |
|---|---|
| Under 1 m | Traffic / close control |
| 1.2–1.5 m | Everyday walks (most popular) |
| 1.8–2 m | Relaxed walks, more freedom |
| 3 m + | Recall training, open spaces |
Always check this product’s Specifications for its exact length and width.

Full description
A slip lead is the one you reach for when there is no time to fasten anything. Out of the car at the vet's, over the head of a dog who has just reversed out of a harness in a car park, handed to you by a rescue with the dog already on the end of it. One piece, no buckle, on in a second, which is the only specification that matters on the day you need it.
This is 8mm rope, soft rather than a tight cotton twist. There is a metal slider on it, which is the piece that stops the loop closing all the way down, and the tabs are hand stitched full grain leather rather than a crimped or moulded finish. It can also be formed into a figure 8 halter, putting a second loop over the muzzle instead of leaving everything on the neck.
- 8mm soft rope, in a slip loop with no buckle
- Metal slider to stop the loop closing fully
- Hand stitched full grain leather tabs
- Can be made into a figure 8 halter
- Hemm and Boo describe the thickness as suiting spaniels
- Two colourways, otherwise identical

Who it's for: owners of spaniel-sized dogs who already walk on a loose lead, and anyone who wants a second lead living in the car or hanging by the back door for the times the collar is not already on.

Common questions
How thick is the rope?
8mm. That is the only dimension Hemm and Boo state in words; the length appears only in the maker's size code.
What stops it tightening too far?
A metal slider. Hemm and Boo fit it so the loop cannot close all the way down; where you set it on the rope is up to you.
What is a figure 8 halter?
A second loop, made from the same lead, that sits over the muzzle so the pressure is not all on the neck. This lead can be formed into one.
What size of dog is it meant for?
Hemm and Boo describe the 8mm thickness as suiting spaniels. Nothing heavier is specified, and a hard puller would be better on a thicker rope.
What are the colours?
Brown and green. They are the same lead otherwise.
Which options can I choose from?
Brown, Green. Pick one above before adding to your basket.
