Colour is not decoration on a lit collar, it is the whole function. Orange and yellow hold their edge against grass, tarmac and leaf litter, which covers most British dog walking most of the year. Blue and white stand out best against frost, snow and pale gravel. Black bodies with a lit strip disappear in daylight and look like a normal collar, which suits owners who do not want a glowing dog on the school run and only need the light at either end of the day.

There are eight options here across two products. Four are the collar, which the dog wears; four are the hand-held rope, which you hold. The lit strip runs the length of either one, so between them you can light the dog, the line, or both. Choosing both is the version that reads properly at a distance, because a lit ring on its own can be almost anything, whilst a lit ring at the end of a lit line is unmistakeably a dog on a lead and people give it room.

• Choice of lit collar or lit hand-held rope

Who it's for: owners walking at dusk on grass and paths who want the higher-visibility orange or yellow, and anyone wanting one lit collar and one lit lead as a matching pair.
