A disposable nappy contains it for the few weeks or the few months it lasts, which keeps the dog in the room with the family rather than shut in the kitchen on a towel, and that is usually the real benefit.
The shape is cut for female anatomy rather than being a unisex wrap, so the absorbent pad sits where it needs to. A soft breathable outer keeps the skin from being held against plastic, and a hook-and-loop fastening closes at the waist so the fit can be adjusted rather than pulled on and hoped for.
