Heart-shaped soft treats built around a mince pie idea, which in dog terms means warm spice rather than fruit and sugar. They are the quiet one in a Christmas range that is otherwise all turkey, and they are worth knowing about for a dog who cannot eat poultry.

There is no meat in them at all. Pea flour and milled broad beans form the body, with chickpea flour, dried sweet potato and rapeseed oil, and the festive character comes from a short list of very small inclusions: mixed herbs at 1%, dried cinnamon at 0.5%, and dried cranberry, orange oil and dried ginger at 0.25% each. Nothing on that list is a common canine allergen, and notably there are no raisins, currants or sultanas, which real mince pies are full of and which dogs must never have.

Their Crimbo Crackers and their Soft-Baked Bars both carry a full protein, fat, fibre, ash and moisture breakdown, so this is a gap in what has been published rather than a food with nothing to declare. We would rather say that than print a figure lifted from a different recipe. If you need the numbers for a dog on a weight or fat-restricted plan, choose something that publishes them.

Who it's for: a dog who reacts to poultry or dairy and gets left out of the Christmas treat tin, and anyone who likes the mince pie joke but wants it to be actually safe, which a real mince pie is not.

Common questions

Mince pies contain raisins, which are toxic to dogs. Are these safe?

There is no vine fruit in them. The whole list is pea flour, milled broad beans, vegetable glycerine, chickpea flour, dried sweet potato, rapeseed oil, mixed herbs, dried cinnamon, dried cranberry, orange oil and dried ginger. Cranberry is not a grape or a raisin. The mince pie part is spice, not fruit filling.

What are the protein and fat figures?

Denzel's have not published an analytical panel for Mistletoe Kisses, and we will not copy one across from another product in the range. If you need those numbers, their Crimbo Crackers publish a full panel.

Is there any meat in them?

None. They are plant-based, which is the main reason we stock them alongside the turkey treats.

Is orange oil safe for dogs?

It is present at 0.25%, as a flavour. That is a quarter of a gram in a 90g pack. It is listed on the pack as an ingredient in a food intended for dogs.

Can I use them for training?

They are soft enough to break up, and the pack panel across the Denzel's range says to feed as a treat or reward and not to overfeed. Count them into the daily food, not on top of it.
