A cat that has already worked out what a soft toy is for will usually ignore a shape it recognises within a few sessions, which is why anything strung together from more than one texture buys a few extra weeks of interest before the novelty wears off.

This one is built around a ring rather than a single ball, with a catnip-filled ball threaded onto it alongside beads and feathers. The ring shape means it can be batted, rolled or dragged rather than only pounced on, and the catnip ball gives a cat a reason to keep coming back to it between play sessions.

• Ring shape with a catnip-filled ball attached
• Beads and feathers add movement and texture
• Weighs 0.17kg
• Sold as a single toy
• Packaging should be removed and recycled before play

On supervision. Coolpet's own caution is for pet use only, supervised, with all packaging removed and play stopped the moment the toy looks damaged — sensible advice for anything carrying beads and feathers, since a stray bead becomes a swallowing risk once stitching gives way. No dimension for the ring itself is published, so go by the 0.17kg weight rather than a size guide when deciding if it suits a small cat.

Who it's for: cats that lose interest in a single-texture toy quickly, and owners who want one toy that offers batting, chasing and a catnip hit in the same piece.
