6 inches across, which is 15cm — the mid size in the Boomi range. The maker's breed guide puts it with Border Collies, Cocker Spaniels and French Bulldogs.

One larger than their jaw, so they cannot pick it up. Company of Animals' guide: 4"/10cm for a Jack Russell, Westie or Pug; 6"/15cm for a Border Collie, Cocker Spaniel or French Bulldog; 8"/20cm for a Retriever, Boxer or Staffie; 10"/25cm for a German Shepherd, Rottweiler or Dobermann. Puppies may need a smaller size, but still one they cannot carry.

An ultra-strong, high-density polymer with a rigid shell that resists punctures and chewing. It is the successor to Company of Animals' original Boomer Ball.

No. It is built for pushing, nosing and chasing, not carrying or chewing. Choosing the right size is what stops the chewing: if your dog cannot get their jaws round it, they cannot chew it.

The maker does not say, so treat it as a garden and field toy rather than a water one.

The 15cm for most. A typical Border Collie is 14–20kg, so the 15cm is the right size: bigger than their jaw, so it stays a pushing game. One size covers the whole breed. Bred to move stock, so most take to a herding ball in the first session.

The 15cm for most. A typical Cocker Spaniel is 13–14.5kg, so the 15cm is the right size: bigger than their jaw, so it stays a pushing game. One size covers the whole breed. Chasers rather than shovers; keep the first sessions short and it holds their interest.

The breed runs 5–11kg and crosses a size step, so go by your own dog — smaller, up to 9kg: the 15cm; larger, over 9kg: the 15cm.

The 15cm for most. A typical Dachshund is 9–12kg, so the 15cm is the right size: bigger than their jaw, so it stays a pushing game. One size covers the whole breed. Hounds are chasers, and a ball they can never catch keeps them going.
