Cats are harder to dress than dogs, and the reason is nearly always the neck and shoulders. This is sized by number rather than by letter, and every number carries three measurements - back length, chest circumference and neck circumference - which is the only sensible way to buy a jumper for an animal that will give you exactly one attempt at putting it on.

The knit is acrylic, warm without weight, with a rolled turtleneck that covers the throat. Size 6 is genuinely small, 17 to 20cm along the back with a 16 to 20cm neck, which fits a kitten or a very small cat, whilst 16 runs to a 42 to 46cm back. The colour list runs well past Christmas into pumpkins, strawberries and pandas, so this is really a year-round jumper wearing a festive label.

• Size 6: back 17-20cm, chest 24-28cm, neck 16-20cm
• Size 8: back 21-25cm, chest 26-30cm, neck 18-22cm
• Size 10: back 25-30cm, chest 28-33cm, neck 22-25cm
• Size 12: back 30-35cm, chest 30-36cm, neck 23-28cm
• Size 14: back 36-40cm, chest 32-40cm, neck 24-29cm
• Size 16: back 42-46cm, chest 34-42cm, neck 26-32cm
• Acrylic knit with a rolled turtleneck collar

Two things worth knowing. The maker's own table continues past 16 to sizes 18, 20 and 24, but only 6 to 16 are stocked here, so if your animal measures beyond a 46cm back this range stops short of you. And whatever the size chart says, watch the cat wearing it: if it freezes, flattens or cannot reach itself to groom, the jumper comes straight off. No cat should be left alone in one.

Who it's for: indoor cats in cold houses, elderly or thin cats who feel winter, hairless breeds such as the Sphynx, and small dogs whose owners want measurements rather than size letters.
