Pet coats and jumpers are sized mainly by back length, with chest girth as a second check. Back length matters most for coverage.
How to measure
- Back length: measure along the spine from the base of the neck (collar area) to the base of the tail.
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, behind the front legs.
- If the two measurements suggest different sizes, choose by back length and allow for the chest.

Full description
Nobody buys a Santa hat for the cat expecting to leave it on. You buy it for the ninety seconds it takes to get the photograph, and for that job what matters is that it is soft, light and comes off again without a struggle. This one is short plush with a silk flower trim, which is warmer to the touch and considerably less scratchy than the stiff felt most novelty pet hats are cut from.
Plush also behaves better on a head. Felt hats hold a rigid cone and topple at the first shake; a plush hat slumps very slightly and stays put a moment longer, which is the difference between a photograph and a blur. At 40g there is barely anything there to object to, and the flower trim gives it something other than the usual white pom-pom, so it does not look like the same hat every other pet on the timeline is wearing.
