Cats get bored of toys faster than owners expect, and the usual reason is that every toy in the basket does the same thing. A varied set works because it covers different behaviours, giving a cat something to chase, something to chew, something to bat at and something to wrestle, and it lets you find out cheaply which of those your particular cat is actually interested in.

The five-piece bundle mixes textures and jobs rather than repeating one idea. There is a crinkle fish plush for the wrestle-and-rabbit-kick, a silvervine chew stick and a matatabi ball for cats who respond to scent, a woven sisal carrot for chewing and clawing, and a mouse in a spring cage for the batting game that needs no human involvement. Silvervine and matatabi are worth knowing about, because plenty of cats who ignore catnip entirely will respond to those two.

• Five toys per set
• Crinkle fish plush for wrestling and kicking
• Silvervine chew stick and matatabi catnip ball
• Woven sisal carrot for chewing and clawing
• Mouse in a spring cage for solo batting
• Seven set combinations available

On what turns up in the box. Sets are listed as combinations A through G and the exact mix varies between them, so treat the contents as a selection rather than a guaranteed line-up. Small plush toys with attached parts are for supervised play, and anything a cat can chew loose should be checked over regularly and binned as soon as it starts coming apart.

Who it's for: Indoor cats who need more variety than the toy basket currently offers, and anyone buying for a new kitten.
