Wood shavings have been the default small animal bedding for decades, but the dust and oils in some of them can bother a small animal's airways more than the bedding is meant to protect it from. A paper-based alternative sidesteps that starting material entirely.

This is made from 100% reclaimed natural fibre, using tissue and paper manufacturing off-cuts and kiln-dried Western Hemlock, Spruce, Douglas Fir and Pine wood, coloured with pet-safe dyes similar to those used in bath and facial tissue, with no harsh chemicals added. Carefresh's instruction is to apply 2-6 inches to the enclosure.
