Bedding that doesn't hold odour is the difference between a hutch you're happy to clean weekly and one that needs attention every couple of days, and softwood shavings are the traditional answer to that. Bestpets' shavings are a straightforward, no-frills version of it.

They're softwood shavings with a forest-fresh pine fragrance, described as biodegradable and eco-friendly, manufactured in the UK. Bestpets pitch them at rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice and other small animals generally rather than any one species specifically.

• Softwood shavings

• Biodegradable and eco-friendly
• Manufactured in the UK
• Suitable for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice and other small animals
• LGE bag

One thing worth knowing. No bag volume or litre capacity is given for this — only the weight, 3.5kg — so if you're trying to work out how many bags you need for a specific hutch size, we can't give you a fill-volume figure to plan against.

Who it's for: small animal owners who want a straightforward, unscented-beyond-pine bedding rather than a paper or fleece alternative, at a size that lasts a reasonable stretch between changes.
