At 118cm across, this spans a full rear bench instead of perching on a single seat, and that changes how a dog travels. Rather than bracing on a narrow cushion, they can lie out along the car and shift position on a long drive. The 15cm depth is the other half of it: enough padding to take the edge off poor road surfaces, rather than a token layer between dog and seat.

Bolstered walls run around the edge, giving a nervous dog something solid to press into. Dogs settle faster against a raised edge than on an open flat surface, which is why so many of them choose to sleep jammed against the arm of a sofa at home. The base wipes clean, so mud, drool and the occasional accident come off with a cloth instead of soaking into the upholstery beneath. When you need the seats back for people, the whole thing lifts out in one piece rather than having to be unthreaded from the headrests.

• Measures 118 x 52 x 15cm
• Spans both rear seats
• Bolstered padded walls all the way round
• Wipe-clean base
• Lifts out in one piece
• Two colours: orange and grey

Two things worth knowing. At 118cm this needs a full-width rear bench, so measure across your back seats before ordering, because it will not sit properly in a small three-door. And a bolstered bed is comfort rather than safety: it does nothing for a dog in a collision, so keep them in a harness clipped to a seatbelt anchor as well as on the bed.

Who it's for: Owners of medium and large dogs who cover real distances by car and are happy to hand the back seats over entirely.
