Small breed dogs generally need a more energy-dense diet relative to their size than larger dogs do, which is why a small-breed recipe usually carries a different nutritional profile from a standard adult formula rather than just a smaller kibble shape.

BAKERS' Small Breed Superfoods Beef is built on wholegrain cereals at 43%, ahead of meat and animal derivatives at 18%, of which beef itself makes up 4%. Vegetable protein extracts, oils and fats, glycerol and a small amount of spirulina round out the recipe.

• Wholegrain cereals 43% — the largest ingredient
• Meat and animal derivatives 18%, of which beef is 4%
• Protein 25%, fat content 12%, crude ash 7%, crude fibre 3.5%
• Omega 3 fatty acids 0.15%, omega 6 fatty acids 2.8%
• Feeding guide scaled for toy and small dogs
• 1.1KG bag

What the label does not say. Cereal still outweighs meat and animal derivatives here, at 43% against 18%, and beef itself is 4% of the bag — the same pattern as this brand's standard-size beef recipe, just in a smaller pack aimed at smaller dogs.

Who it's for: owners of a toy or small breed who want a complete food sized and formulated for a smaller dog's higher energy needs, on a budget.
