Full description

A training session works best when a treat can be handed over dozens of times without a dog filling up, which is why a training treat is judged on how small and low-calorie it can be, not on how much a dog seems to enjoy one.

Arden Grange's Grain Free Chicken training treat leads with fresh chicken (30%), with potato protein, sweet potato and pea starch as the main other ingredients, plus small additions of dried krill, blueberries, rose hips, apple, spirulina and coconut. Its Metabolisable Energy is 264kcal per 100g.

80g bag
Fresh chicken (30%)
Grain free
Protein 21%, fat content 3%, crude fibre 2%, moisture 28%
Metabolisable energy 264kcal/100g

On the small print. The chicken carries an asterisk on Arden Grange's own label noting it "may contain traces of other animal proteins and cereals" — a standard caution on treats made in a shared facility, but worth reading if your dog is on a strict single-protein exclusion diet.

Who it's for: an owner doing frequent training rewards who wants a low-calorie, grain-free treat rather than a biscuit-style one meant for occasional use.

Why we chose it

The calorie figure here is genuinely useful: 264kcal/100g, stated plainly rather than left off the label. That matters for anyone doing a lot of repetition in a training session and trying to keep a dog's daily treat allowance in check.
