Size guide & how to measure
Harnesses are sized by the chest (girth) — the measurement around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.
How to measure
- Stand your dog up squarely.
- Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs.
- Keep two fingers under the tape so the fit is snug, not tight.
- If your dog is between sizes, choose the larger one.
| Size | Typical chest / girth | Rough guide |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 28–40 cm | Toy breeds, very small dogs |
| S | 38–53 cm | Small dogs (e.g. Dachshund, Yorkie) |
| M | 50–68 cm | Medium dogs (e.g. Cocker Spaniel, Beagle) |
| L | 65–85 cm | Large dogs (e.g. Labrador, Boxer) |
| XL | 82–105 cm | Giant breeds (e.g. German Shepherd, Rottweiler) |
Ranges are approximate and vary by style. Always check this product’s Specifications for its exact measurements.
Full description
Getting a harness over a dog's head is where a lot of harness routines fall apart - some dogs duck away, some just don't like anything coming towards their face. A step-in design sidesteps that entirely: the dog steps through, and it fastens underneath rather than over the head.
The Ancol Step In Harness has a comfort-fit shape in breathable mesh, with hook-and-loop adjustment for fit and a snap buckle for security once it's on. A reflective strip runs across it for visibility in low light, which matters more on a step-in harness worn on early or late walks. It comes in black or red, across five girth sizes: XS (30-36cm), S (35-42cm), S/M (41-47cm), M (46-54cm) and L (48-56cm), all measured around the dog's girth.
- Step-in design - no need to go over the dog's head
- Reflective strip for low-light visibility
- Breathable mesh, comfort-fit shape
- Hook-and-loop adjustment plus a snap buckle
- Five girth sizes: XS 30-36cm, S 35-42cm, S/M 41-47cm, M 46-54cm, L 48-56cm
- Available in black or red
On sizing. All five sizes are measured around the dog's girth, not neck or length, so measure your dog around the chest, just behind the front legs, before choosing - a size guessed from breed or weight alone is the most common way a harness ends up too loose or too tight.
Who it's for: owners of a dog that resists anything going over its head, or anyone who prefers a step-in harness generally, across a wide size range from a small to a larger medium dog.

Why we chose it
A step-in design solves a specific, common problem - dogs that hate things coming over their heads - rather than being a design choice for its own sake. Five sizes with clear girth measurements also makes it easier to get right the first time than a vaguer small/medium/large split.
