Ancol's size names are not sizes
They are coded 1-2, 2-5 and 5-9, which look like dog weights in kilos and are nothing of the sort — they are range codes, and the measurements that matter sit underneath them at 20-30cm, 30-50cm and 45-70cm. Get a tape round the dog's neck before choosing, because two of the three ranges overlap between 45cm and 50cm and a guess in that region lands in the wrong one. No collar width and no buckle material have been supplied to us.
Why we chose it
The recycled fabric is the bit I would actually pay extra for, and Ancol put a number against it instead of leaving it as a claim. The pattern is why it sells though, because there is a whole matching range behind it and people come back for the lead. Three neck sizes off one design also means I can stock it properly rather than guessing.

How to measure
- Wrap a soft tape around the base of the neck.
- Add room for two fingers between the tape and the neck.
- Use that measurement to pick a size whose range it falls within.

Nobody buys a collar for the collar. It gets bought because the old one has gone green at the buckle, or the puppy has outgrown its third one since March, or because somebody wants the dog to look like it belongs to a particular household — and only two of those three involve anybody measuring anything, which is where collar buying usually goes wrong.
This is the dalmatian pattern from Ancol's Soho collection, made from 100% recycled fabric; Ancol state that each collar keeps 3 plastic bottles out of landfill. It comes in three neck sizes, and the useful numbers are the neck ranges rather than the codes: 20-30cm, 30-50cm and 45-70cm.
