A ball that only bounces gives a dog one game to play. Adding rope loops either side turns the same object into something that can be thrown, tugged, or shaken about, which is usually what keeps a toy in rotation rather than abandoned in the garden after a week.

The Actionball Football, made by Sharples Pet, is built to be tough and tuggable, with additional rope on each side for tug games alongside the usual fetch-and-chase. It's sold in two sizes, named Large and Small on the packaging.

• Tough, tuggable outdoor ball
• Rope handles on each side for tugging
• Two sizes: Large and Small
• Suitable for garden and outdoor play

A sizing note worth flagging. the maker's own information gives us a diameter figure for one of the two sizes but not clearly which - so rather than risk quoting the wrong size against the wrong option, we haven't stated a diameter for either here. Go by the Large or Small option name rather than a cm figure, and get in touch if you need the exact size confirmed before ordering.

Who it's for: owners of a dog that likes both fetch and tug, who want one toy that does both rather than carrying two separate toys on a walk.
