Can parrots eat eggs?

Yes, parrots can eat egg, and a small amount of plain, thoroughly cooked egg is a genuinely useful occasional treat rather than something to avoid. The two things that matter are cooking it properly, since raw egg carries a real salmonella risk, and keeping the portion small relative to the rest of their diet.

Why cooked egg is fine, in moderation

Egg is a concentrated source of protein and amino acids, and many owners and breeders use small amounts of cooked egg to support a parrot during moulting or breeding, when protein needs rise. It is not a toxic or risky food for a parrot in the way certain fruits, vegetables and human foods are, provided it is prepared properly first.

That said, egg should stay an occasional addition to a diet built around a proper parrot pellet or seed mix, rather than a regular meal component. Too much of any protein-rich extra can unbalance a diet that is otherwise designed to be complete.

How to prepare it safely

Cook the egg thoroughly, whether boiled, scrambled or poached, with no oil, butter, salt or seasoning of any kind. Raw or undercooked egg carries a genuine salmonella risk, and birds are particularly vulnerable to the illness it can cause, so this is not a food to offer raw or lightly cooked.

Chop or mash the cooked egg into small, manageable pieces sized for your bird, and offer it fresh rather than leaving it sitting in the cage, since egg spoils quickly, especially in a warm room. Remove any uneaten portion after a couple of hours rather than letting it sit.

The shell can also be offered as a source of calcium, but only if it has been boiled and dried first to kill off any bacteria, and crushed into small pieces rather than left as large shards your bird could injure themselves on.

How much, and how often

A small piece of cooked egg once or twice a week is plenty for most parrots, and considerably more is not needed unless a vet has specifically recommended extra protein for a particular bird. Watch for any change in droppings or behaviour after introducing anything new, and stop if your bird seems unwell.

If your bird has an existing health condition, or you are unsure how much is appropriate for a particular species or size of parrot, it is worth checking with a vet experienced in treating birds before making egg a regular part of their diet.

Warning signs to watch for

Most parrots take to a small amount of cooked egg without any trouble, but keep an eye out for loose droppings, a sudden drop in appetite, or unusual quietness after trying it for the first time. As with any new food, introduce it in a very small amount initially rather than a full portion.

Egg left sitting in a warm cage for more than an hour or two can spoil quickly and grow bacteria, so remove any uneaten portion promptly rather than leaving it in with the rest of the day's food. A bird that seems unwell after eating egg, or any other food, is worth a call to a vet experienced with birds rather than waiting to see if it passes.

Common questions

Can parrots eat raw egg?
No, raw or undercooked egg is best avoided entirely. It carries a genuine risk of salmonella contamination, and birds can become seriously unwell from it, so any egg offered to a parrot should be cooked all the way through first.
Can parrots eat eggshell?
Yes, but only once it has been boiled and dried to remove bacteria, then crushed into small pieces. It can be a useful source of calcium prepared this way, but a raw, unwashed shell is not safe to offer.
How much egg can a parrot have in a week?
A small piece once or twice a week is a sensible amount for most parrots, offered as an occasional extra rather than a regular meal. If you are ever unsure what is appropriate for your specific bird, ask a vet experienced with birds.
Is egg good for parrots during moulting?
Many owners offer a little extra protein, including cooked egg, during a heavy moult, when a bird's protein needs can rise. It is not a requirement for every bird, and if you are concerned about a particularly hard moult, it is worth mentioning to a vet rather than guessing.
Can baby parrots or chicks eat egg?
This is best left to an experienced breeder or a vet familiar with hand-rearing, since young chicks have very different nutritional needs from an adult bird. Do not offer egg or any other extra food to a chick without guidance from someone experienced with that species.
