Can parrots eat celery?

Yes, parrots can eat celery, and many enjoy the crunch as part of a varied diet of fresh vegetables. The main thing to manage is the stringy fibres running through the stalk, which can be a choking hazard if the celery isn't cut small enough, and washing it well to remove any pesticide residue.

Why celery is a reasonable addition

Celery is mostly water with some fibre and a modest amount of vitamins, making it a low-calorie addition to a parrot's diet of fresh vegetables alongside their main pellet or seed mix. Many parrots enjoy the crunchy texture, which also gives them something to work at rather than eat in one go.

It shouldn't be relied on for significant nutrition given how much of it is water, but as part of a varied vegetable rotation alongside things like carrot, pepper and leafy greens, it's a perfectly reasonable inclusion.

Some owners also use a chunk of celery as a simple foraging challenge, since a bird working at pulling strands apart is engaging its beak and mind in a way that a soft, pre-chopped treat doesn't, which is a small but genuine enrichment benefit alongside the nutritional one.

How to prepare it safely

Wash the celery thoroughly to remove any pesticide residue, then cut it into small pieces rather than offering long stalks whole. The stringy fibres that run the length of a celery stalk are the main risk — in long pieces they can catch in a bird's throat, so chopping rather than leaving strands intact matters more here than with most vegetables.

Remove the leafy tops if you're not sure of their source, and offer a small piece appropriate to your bird's size — a teaspoon-sized amount for a smaller parrot, or a slightly larger piece for a big species.

What to avoid

Don't offer celery with any dip, dressing, salt or seasoning, all of which are unsuitable for a bird's diet regardless of the vegetable underneath. Wilted or old celery is also best skipped, since it's more likely to have lost the crispness that makes it easy for a bird to manage safely.

As with any new food, introduce celery gradually and watch how your bird takes to it — some parrots take readily to new vegetables, while others need a few attempts before they'll try something unfamiliar.

Building a varied vegetable diet

A rotation of vegetables — carrot, pepper, broccoli, leafy greens and celery among them — alongside a good-quality pellet base gives a parrot both nutritional variety and something to occupy their time, which matters for a species that spends a lot of its natural day foraging.

Keep any single vegetable, celery included, as one part of that rotation rather than a mainstay, and always alongside a properly formulated pellet or seed mix as the foundation of the diet.

Offering vegetables in different ways — whole pieces threaded on a foraging skewer, chopped small in a bowl, or hidden inside a foraging toy — can also make the same handful of celery more engaging for a bird than simply dropping it into the food dish each time, which helps keep an intelligent bird from getting bored.

Common questions

Do I need to remove the strings from celery before giving it to my parrot?
Cutting the celery into small pieces rather than long stalks reduces the choking risk from the stringy fibres considerably, which matters more than trying to peel every string out individually.
Can parrots eat celery leaves?
The leafy tops are generally fine in small amounts if you're confident of where the celery came from and it's been washed well, though many owners simply stick to the stalk to keep things straightforward.
How much celery can I give my parrot?
A small piece, roughly a teaspoon's worth for a smaller bird or a bit more for a larger species, is plenty as part of a varied vegetable rotation rather than a daily staple.
What vegetables are toxic to parrots?
Avocado is the best-known one to avoid entirely, along with raw or dried beans, which contain a toxin destroyed only by proper cooking. If you're ever unsure about a specific vegetable, an avian vet can advise on what's safe for your species.
