Can parrots eat butternut squash?

Yes, parrots can eat butternut squash, and it is a genuinely good vegetable to offer. It is not toxic in any form, most parrots take to the taste and texture readily, and it can make up a reasonable part of the fresh vegetables in a varied diet rather than being an occasional treat only.

Why butternut squash is a good choice

Butternut squash is a nutrient-dense vegetable that many parrot species enjoy, and it is safe both raw and cooked, which gives you flexibility in how you offer it. It contains no substances that are toxic to birds, unlike some other foods that need to be avoided altogether.

Its firm texture also gives a parrot something to work at and chew through, which suits the foraging behaviour many species naturally show, rather than a food that disappears in one bite.

How to prepare and serve it

Wash it thoroughly, remove the skin and seeds, and cut the flesh into pieces sized for your parrot's beak — smaller for smaller species, larger chunks for a big parrot that can hold and work through a bigger piece. Both raw and lightly cooked squash are fine; cooking softens the texture, which some birds prefer.

Never add salt, butter, oil or seasoning when cooking squash for your parrot. Serve it plain, and remove any uneaten fresh food from the cage within a few hours so it does not spoil.

How much and how often

Squash can be offered as a regular part of the fresh vegetable portion of a varied diet, alongside other safe vegetables, rather than being restricted to an occasional treat. Variety matters more than any single vegetable, so rotate it with other parrot-safe options rather than relying on it alone.

As with introducing any new food, offer a small amount the first time and watch how your parrot responds before making it a regular addition.

What to watch for

A parrot that seems unusually quiet, fluffed up, or off its food after trying something new is worth watching closely, and any of those signs together, or lasting more than a day, are worth a call to your vet. Parrots, like most birds, tend to hide illness well, so a change in normal behaviour matters.

Squash itself is very unlikely to cause a reaction given how well tolerated it generally is, but the same caution applies to introducing any new food for the first time.

Other squash and pumpkin varieties

Butternut is not the only squash worth offering — pumpkin and most other culinary squash varieties are generally safe for parrots in the same way, prepared the same plain way with the skin and seeds removed. Rotating between a few different safe vegetables, squash included, gives more variety than relying on one alone.

The one part of any squash worth treating with a little more caution is a tough, hard skin, since some larger squash varieties have a rind too hard for a bird to safely bite through — remove it before offering the flesh, regardless of which variety you are using.

Common questions

Can parrots eat raw butternut squash?
Yes, raw squash is safe for parrots, with the skin and seeds removed first. Some birds prefer the firmer raw texture, while others take more readily to it lightly cooked and softened — either is fine.
Should I cook butternut squash before giving it to my parrot?
You can offer it either raw or cooked; both are safe. If you do cook it, serve it plain with no salt, butter, oil or seasoning added, since those are not suitable for a parrot even in a food that is itself perfectly safe.
Can parrots eat butternut squash seeds?
It is best to remove the seeds before offering squash to your parrot. They are not a known toxic risk in the way some other seeds are, but they are not necessary either, and removing them keeps the preparation simple and consistent.
How often can I give my parrot butternut squash?
It can be a regular part of the fresh vegetable portion of a varied diet rather than an occasional treat only. Rotating it with other parrot-safe vegetables gives better variety than relying on any single food, squash included.
