Cold-pressed dog food
Cold-pressed food is a type of dry dog food processed at a much lower temperature than standard extruded kibble, typically under 100°C rather than the high heat used in ordinary kibble manufacturing. The lower heat is claimed to preserve more of the natural nutrients in the ingredients, and the food itself tends to be denser and less airy than typical kibble of the same size.
How it differs from ordinary kibble in the bowl
Cold-pressed kibble is generally smaller, harder and denser per scoop than standard extruded food, which means feeding guidelines by weight matter more than judging portions by eye — a cup of cold-pressed food is not nutritionally the same as a cup of ordinary kibble. Check the pack's own feeding chart rather than assuming it matches what you fed before.
Because it is denser, some owners find a smaller volume goes further, which can be useful for storage but means it is easy to accidentally overfeed if you are switching from a lighter, more airy kibble and keep the same scoop size.
Storage and shelf life
Cold-pressed food generally has a shorter shelf life once opened than standard kibble, since it is processed with less heat, so buying a size you can use within a few weeks of opening is worth planning for rather than bulk-buying the largest bag available.
Keep it in a sealed, airtight container away from damp and direct heat, exactly as you would ordinary kibble — the lower processing temperature does not make it more resistant to going stale.
Switching a dog onto it
Any change of dog food, cold-pressed or otherwise, is best introduced gradually over seven to ten days, mixing increasing amounts of the new food with the old to avoid an upset stomach. This matters slightly more with cold-pressed food given the denser texture and different feeding volumes involved.
Some cold-pressed foods are designed to be soaked briefly in water before serving, which softens the kibble and can help with the transition for a dog used to a lighter, airier food — check the pack for whether this is recommended rather than assuming every cold-pressed product is fed dry. Keep an eye on stools and general energy through the changeover period; a dog that seems unusually thirsty or is producing much firmer stools than before may simply need the water content or feeding amount adjusted slightly rather than being switched back altogether.
