Frontline Spot On ingredients
Frontline Spot On and Frontline Plus both use fipronil as their active ingredient, an insecticide that works by disrupting a flea or tick's nervous system on contact after it spreads across the pet's skin and coat. Frontline Plus adds a second ingredient, an insect growth regulator, which also targets flea eggs and larvae in the surrounding environment rather than just adult fleas on the pet.
How fipronil actually works
After application, fipronil spreads through the natural oils in a pet's skin and coat rather than being absorbed into the bloodstream, collecting in hair follicles and gradually releasing over several weeks. Fleas and ticks are affected on contact with the coat, which is why the product keeps working between applications rather than needing to be reapplied constantly.
This is a well-established, widely used ingredient in flea and tick treatments generally available without a prescription in the UK, matched to a pet's species and weight band on the pack. Always use the correct product for the species and size stated, since a treatment formulated for one is not automatically safe for the other.
