Best wet cat food for fussy eaters
The most useful thing to know about feeding a fussy cat is that texture and smell usually matter more than the brand on the label — a cat who turns their nose up at a pate might eat the same flavour readily in a flaked or jelly format, so working through textures is often more productive than working through brands.
Why cats get fussy in the first place
Cats are naturally cautious about new food, which made sense for a solitary hunter in the wild but shows up in a pet cat as suspicion of anything unfamiliar, or sudden disinterest in something they previously ate happily. A cat's strong sense of smell also means a food that has gone slightly stale, or a bowl that has not been washed properly, can put them off eating something they would otherwise like.
Genuine pickiness is also sometimes confused with a cat simply preferring to graze through the day rather than clear a bowl in one sitting, which is not the same problem and does not need solving the same way.
What actually tends to help
Offering a small variety of textures — pate, flaked chunks in gravy, a jelly-based pouch — rather than sticking to one format helps identify what a particular cat actually prefers, since this varies a great deal between individual cats rather than following any obvious pattern.
Serving wet food at room temperature rather than straight from the fridge makes it more appealing to most cats, since a cold, muted smell is less enticing to a species that relies heavily on scent to decide whether something is worth eating. Fresh bowls, washed between servings, and small portions offered more often rather than one large meal left out to dry at the edges also help.
When fussiness is worth a vet visit
A cat that stops eating altogether for more than a day, especially if they seem otherwise unwell, lethargic or are losing weight, needs a vet rather than a change of food — cats can develop a serious condition affecting the liver if they go without food for even a short period, which makes sudden appetite loss different from ordinary pickiness.
If your cat has always been a fussy eater and is otherwise bright, active and maintaining a healthy weight, that is far more likely to be simple preference than a medical issue, but any sudden change from their normal pattern is worth mentioning at their next check-up regardless.
