An Australian Kelpie is a lean, athletic herding breed bred to work all day, and that activity level is the main thing that should drive food choice: a Kelpie that is genuinely active, whether working stock or simply exercised hard, generally needs a higher-calorie, higher-protein food than a similarly sized but less active breed.

Matching food to actual activity level
Kelpies were bred for sustained physical work, and a genuinely active Kelpie burns through calories at a rate that a food designed for an average pet dog may not keep up with, leading to a dog that struggles to maintain weight despite eating a full bowl. A food formulated for working or active dogs, with a higher fat and protein content, is worth considering for a Kelpie that is properly exercised or working most days.
The flip side matters just as much: a Kelpie kept as a companion dog with more moderate exercise does not need a working-dog level of calories, and feeding one to a less active Kelpie is a fast route to unwanted weight gain on a breed built to be lean. Match the food to the dog in front of you, not the breed's reputation.
Why protein quality matters for this breed
A working or highly active Kelpie benefits from a food where a good proportion of the protein comes from named animal sources, since this supports muscle maintenance and recovery from sustained activity in a way that lower-quality protein sources do less effectively. Checking that a named meat, rather than a generic 'meat and animal derivatives', appears near the top of the ingredients list is a reasonable way to judge this.
This does not mean the highest protein percentage available is automatically the right choice for every Kelpie — a dog with a more moderate activity level does not need to be fed like a working sheepdog, and matching the food to genuine energy output rather than the breed name avoids over- or under-feeding.
Treats and training food
Kelpies are famously intelligent and trainable, and food-based training is a natural fit for the breed, but frequent treat use during training sessions should be accounted for in their overall daily intake rather than added entirely on top of a full meal. Small, low-calorie training treats let you reward often without the calories piling up as fast.
Because Kelpies tend to work in short, repeated bursts during training, breaking a treat into several smaller pieces stretches one treat across more rewards than handing over a whole piece each time.
