What to feed a chihuahua
A chihuahua's diet needs to work around a genuinely tiny body, usually somewhere between one and three kilograms fully grown, which means small kibble that is easy to eat, careful portion control to avoid excess weight on such a small frame, and frequent small meals while they are puppies.
Why chihuahuas need small-breed nutrition
Small dogs have a faster metabolism relative to their size than large breeds, so a chihuahua often needs more calories per kilogram of body weight than a bigger dog would, packed into a much smaller amount of food. A food formulated for small or toy breeds is built around exactly this.
Kibble size matters more than owners sometimes expect. A chihuahua's mouth and jaw are small, and standard-sized kibble can be genuinely difficult for them to pick up and chew comfortably, which is part of why toy-breed formulas use a smaller kibble shape.
Puppies need extra care with meal timing
Chihuahua puppies, and toy breed puppies generally, are more prone than larger puppies to a drop in blood sugar between meals, particularly in the first few months. Feeding smaller amounts more often, typically three to four times a day while very young, helps guard against this.
If a chihuahua puppy ever seems unusually weak, wobbly or lethargic, treat it as urgent and offer a small amount of food or a small taste of something sugary like glucose syrup on the gums while you get them seen by a vet, since low blood sugar in a tiny puppy can become serious quickly.

A small amount of extra weight makes a proportionally bigger difference on a chihuahua's frame than it would on a larger dog, so keeping treats to a genuinely small share of their daily food matters more than it might seem.
