Raised beds solve a summer problem that padded beds quietly make worse: a thick cushion holds heat against an animal who is already trying to lose it. A woven seat lets air move underneath and through, so a cat or small dog lying on it is being cooled from below rather than insulated. Come winter, the same lift keeps them off a cold, draughty floor, so it earns its place year round.

The seat and backrest are woven in a rattan style over a solid wooden frame, which gives the surface real tension rather than the sag you get from fabric stretched across a metal frame — supportive under the ribs and hips instead of swallowing them. It also happens to look like furniture rather than pet equipment, which matters a great deal if the bed has to live in a sitting room rather than a utility area.

• Woven rattan-style seat and backrest
• Solid wooden frame
• Raised off the floor for airflow underneath
• Supportive, breathable resting surface
• Single option with no variants to choose between

On size, and on sturdiness. What the design does tell us is that it suits cats and small dogs; a large dog landing on a woven seat from a height is asking more of it than it was built for. Wipe clean, but not one to leave out in the rain.

Who it's for: Cats and small dogs who seek out the cool spot in summer, in homes where the bed has to look like it belongs in the room.
