The manufacturer sizes this jumper by weight, and weight is the wrong measurement. Two dogs at four kilos can be ten centimetres apart in back length, and it is length that decides whether a jumper finishes neatly at the base of the tail or rides halfway up the back and bunches at the shoulders. Take a tape to your dog before you take the weight chart seriously, and use the chart only to place yourself in the range.

What the weight chart does tell you honestly is the scale of the garment. The largest size is quoted for dogs up to ten kilos, so this is a small-dog jumper and nothing more, whatever the photographs suggest. Within that range it is a soft core-spun yarn knit, made up in around twenty designs, from plain reindeer and snowflake patterns through to the caped and fluffy jacket versions of the same body.

• XS: 0.5 to 1.5kg
• S: 1.5 to 2.5kg
• M: 2.5 to 4kg
• L: 4 to 5.5kg
• XL: 5.5 to 7.5kg
• XXL: 7.5 to 10kg
• Core-spun yarn knit, around twenty designs

Two things worth knowing. Second, this is indoor warmth. A yarn knit is not windproof and it is not waterproof, so keep a coat for the walk and use the jumper in the house.

Who it's for: chihuahuas, Yorkshire terriers, miniature dachshunds, toy poodles, pomeranians and puppies, in households where the Christmas photograph is compulsory.
