A clipper that dies halfway through a thick-coated dog is worse than useless - it's a half-finished cut and an unhappy dog to finish some other day - so runtime matters as much as cutting power.

This is a cord or cordless clipper with a 6000 RPM rotary motor, built around a precision stainless steel, rust-resistant, chrome-plated blade with four adjustable cutting lengths (1.0mm, 1.6mm, 2.2mm and 2.8mm, an overall range of 1-12mm). Run cordless, it gives up to 210 minutes from a 180-minute charge, or plug in with the 1.8m cable when you need to keep going. A digital LED screen shows battery life, and it comes with a charger, four attachment combs (#1-#4), a soft storage pouch, cleaning brush and blade oil.

• For dogs and cats

On thick or double coats. Wahl don't publish any restriction here, but a 6000 RPM motor with a fine-tooth blade is built for grooming maintenance rather than working through a heavily matted or very dense double coat - for anything beyond a routine trim, expect to go slower and check the blade doesn't overheat.

Who it's for: owners doing their own regular grooming on a dog or cat who want a genuinely cordless option with enough runtime to finish the job in one sitting.
