Specifications

Brand: Vitakraft
Food type: Complementary_or_treat

Full description

A caged bird that has nothing to do with its time is a bird that starts plucking or shrieking out of sheer boredom, which is the whole reason a treat that takes effort to get at — rather than one dropped straight into the bowl — earns its keep.

These are Vitakraft's fruit-flavour Krackers, baked three times onto a natural wooden stick and clipped into the cage, sold here as a pack of two. Vitakraft describe them as specifically designed for parrots, giving a bird something to nibble and work at rather than a treat that disappears in one peck.

Pack of 2 sticks
Baked three times onto a natural wooden stick
Clips into the cage
Fruit flavour
Designed for parrots, including cockatiels

What the label does not say. Vitakraft describe this range elsewhere as a "complete pet food" for cockatiels, but the product is sold and positioned here as a treat — a stick to nibble at, not a bird's whole diet — so we are treating it as a complementary treat rather than a replacement for a proper seed or pellet mix. No ingredient list has been supplied.

Who it's for: owners of a parrot or cockatiel who want an enrichment treat that takes some effort to get through, rather than something eaten in one go.

Why we chose it

Anything that makes a caged bird work a bit harder for its treat is worth having, because boredom is most of what goes wrong with birds kept indoors all day. The wooden stick and cage clip mean it doubles as something to do, not just something to eat.
