Chinchillas keep their coat clean the way nature designed it — by rolling in dust or sand rather than getting wet — and the fineness of that sand is what decides whether it actually works or just sits in the fur.

This is Tiny Friends Farm's Science Bathing Sand, sold under their Supreme Science range, and described as 100% natural. It's suitable for chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils and degus, sold in a 1kg pack, and Tiny Friends Farm say the grain size and density are tested for a dust-free bathing environment.

• 1kg pack
• 100% natural sand

On species. Chinchillas are the animal this kind of bathing sand is best known for, and while Tiny Friends Farm also list it as suitable for hamsters, gerbils and degus, we don't have separate guidance on this card for how often each species should be offered a bath. Chinchillas typically need it far more regularly than a hamster would, so check care guidance specific to your pet rather than assuming one bathing schedule fits all four.

Who it's for: owners of chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils or degus who bathe their pet in sand rather than water.
