The point of a wand toy is that it moves like prey and not like a hand. Cats do not chase things coming towards them; they chase things that dart away, freeze, then twitch. A long line with a soft plush lure on the end lets you do all of that from the sofa, and it keeps your fingers well outside the strike zone when the pounce finally lands.
The handle is smooth wood, which carries more weight and less flex than a plastic stick, so a flick at your end actually moves the lure rather than wobbling the whole rod. The line is long enough to swing the plush in a wide arc, drag it round a doorframe or drop it out of sight behind a chair, which is the move that gets a bored cat off the windowsill.
