The hood is the part people buy this for and the part most dogs ignore. It will sit on her head for the length of a photograph and then be shaken back onto her shoulders, where it does at least add a second layer over the neck. The coat underneath is the real garment: a plaid cotton body with a button front and a soft fleece-lined trim.

Buttons make it slower to put on than a zip or a hook-and-loop wrap, but they hold better on a dog who twists while she is being dressed, and there is no zip to catch fur. The maker describes the cut as skinny with no elasticity in the fabric, which is worth reading carefully. A cotton coat with no give has to fit properly rather than be pulled on, so a broad-chested dog needs a size up from where her back length puts her.

• Plaid cotton body with a button-up front
• Soft fleece-lined trim
• Hood for extra cover on blustery days
• Two patterns: green plaid and red check
• Sizes XS to XL
• Skinny cut with no elasticity in the fabric
• 170 g to 220 g depending on size

On sizing. A non-stretch coat is far less forgiving than a knit. Measure the back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and the chest girth behind the front legs, and size up if she falls between sizes or is deep-chested.

Who it's for: Small dogs on dry winter walks, and owners who want a coat that looks like clothing rather than sportswear.
