How to measure

Measure the bust (chest) at its widest point, just behind the front legs.
Measure the back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
Compare with the figures below - the manufacturer recommends measuring the bust rather than going by weight.

Measurements are the manufacturer's own figures, transcribed exactly. Weight is given in Chinese catties (jin) as printed; 1 catty = 0.5 kg, so 1–3 catties is roughly 0.5–1.5 kg and 15–20 catties roughly 7.5–10 kg. The chart states: "The weight is for reference only. It is recommended to measure the bust. It is normal to have a 2-3cm error in manual measurement." If between sizes, size up.

Full description

The hood is the part people buy this for and the part most dogs ignore. It will sit on her head for the length of a photograph and then be shaken back onto her shoulders, where it does at least add a second layer over the neck. The coat underneath is the real garment: a plaid cotton body with a button front and a soft fleece-lined trim.

Buttons make it slower to put on than a zip or a hook-and-loop wrap, but they hold better on a dog who twists while she is being dressed, and there is no zip to catch fur. The maker describes the cut as skinny with no elasticity in the fabric, which is worth reading carefully. A cotton coat with no give has to fit properly rather than be pulled on, so a broad-chested dog needs a size up from where her back length puts her.
