The base tray on this one is 18.5cm deep, which is deeper than most cages twice the price and is the single feature that decides how much cleaning you do. Guinea pigs kick bedding with real commitment; a shallow lip means a ring of hay around the cage every morning, while a deep tray keeps almost all of it inside where it belongs.

Everything else is arranged to save floor space. The hay feeder is mounted rather than standing, as are the water bottle and food dish, leaving the floor clear for the animals rather than their equipment. A platform with a ramp adds a second level to sit on and watch from, which guinea pigs use more than people expect. The front door is large at 21.5 x 24cm for lifting animals in and out, and the wire sides keep air moving through — important for a species that suffers in stuffy corners.

Which animals, and which not. PawHut are clear this is not for hamsters or rats, and that is right — the bar spacing is set for larger animals and smaller ones will get through. It suits guinea pigs and small rabbits well. Chinchillas are listed but we would be cautious: at 47cm tall there is not enough height for one to jump properly, and jumping is most of what a chinchilla does.
