A mixer is not trying to be a complete meal on its own, and that changes what it is judged on — texture and how well it soaks up whatever wet food or fresh meat it's mixed with matters more than a high protein figure, because the protein is meant to come from what you add.

Laughing Dog make this one from barley meal, oatmeal, maize flour and pea flour rather than wheat, which is the point of it for a dog with a wheat sensitivity. It's oven baked using traditional milling methods, and available across two bag sizes — 2.5kg and 10kg — so you can match the size to how much you actually mix in.
