Specifications

Brand: Johnston & Jeff

Full description

A peanut left to spoil in damp storage can develop aflatoxin, a mould toxin that's genuinely dangerous to the birds eating it, which is why testing for it matters more with peanuts than with almost any other bird food.

Johnston & Jeff sell these as monkey nuts in the shell, sold as a 650G bag. Every batch is aflatoxin tested and checked to be free from mould and infestation, and the company say they select only the best varieties and grades.

650G bag
Sold in the shell
Aflatoxin tested
Free from mould and infestation
Calorific value 540 kcals per 100g

One thing worth knowing. Johnston & Jeff's own instruction is to feed only from a wire mesh feeder — not scattered loose or fed from an open tray — which is a safety point worth following rather than treating as optional.

Who it's for: anyone feeding a general mix of garden birds who wants a smaller bag of in-shell peanuts, tested for safety, rather than an unbranded bulk bag of unknown origin.

Why we chose it

Aflatoxin testing is not something every peanut maker bothers to state, and it's the single most important safety detail on a peanut product for birds. That it's also sold in the shell, in a smaller 650G bag, makes it an easy size to try without committing to a big sack.
