Not every seed mix needs fruit and nut pieces to do its job, and a plainer blend formulated specifically around a species' basic nutritional needs is sometimes the more straightforward choice than a dressed-up version of the same thing.

This Cockatiel & Parakeet mix combines white and red millet, small striped sunflower, white sunflower, canary seed, safflower, hemp seed, groats, buckwheat, oats, paddy rice and a little vegetable oil. Johnston & Jeff describe it as specially formulated for these small parrot species, and rich in digestible proteins and oils.

• 1KG bag
• Millet, sunflower, canary seed, safflower, hemp seed, groats, buckwheat, oats, paddy rice
• Described as a complete foodstuff by Johnston & Jeff
• Contains oat and grain-family ingredients — not a grain-free mix
• Specially formulated for cockatiels and parakeets

On the mix. This is a plainer seed blend than this brand's fruit-enriched Premium Parakeet Mix — no papaya, pepper or banana chips here, just the seed base itself, so choose between them based on whether you want the extras.

Who it's for: cockatiel and parakeet owners who want a straightforward, species-formulated seed mix rather than a fruit-and-nut enriched blend.
