Nobody brushes a cat's teeth twice a day, and most dogs are only marginally more cooperative, so anything that works from inside the food bowl rather than needing cooperation at the sink has an obvious appeal.

This is a powder rather than a paste or a rinse: Johnson's include a scoop in the tub and the idea is to add it to the pet's food regularly rather than apply it directly to the teeth. It's built around two named natural ingredients, Fucus Vesiculosus seaweed and alfalfa, and Johnson's say regular use helps guard against plaque, tartar and bad breath. It's for dogs and cats over 12 weeks of age, and the tub is 70g.

• 70g tub with scoop included
• Added to food rather than applied to teeth
• Contains Fucus Vesiculosus seaweed and alfalfa
• For dogs and cats over 12 weeks of age

On what this can't fix. This is a complementary feeding stuff, not a substitute for brushing or a dental check — Johnson's don't publish a daily quantity beyond "add regularly using the scoop provided," so if your pet already has visible tartar or sore gums, that's worth a vet look rather than something to manage from the food bowl alone.

Who it's for: owners of a dog or cat who won't tolerate tooth brushing, and who want something added to the daily bowl rather than a separate routine.
