Canker spreads through a loft quietly, since a bird can carry it before it looks unwell, which is exactly why racing and exhibition keepers treat it on a schedule rather than waiting for visible signs. Waiting for symptoms is how an outbreak gets ahead of you.

Harkanker Liquid, made by Petlife, is designed to prevent a build-up and spread of canker in adult racing and exhibition pigeons. The manufacturer's own guidance is to give it at the beginning and end of the racing season, or when signs of infection appear, and to medicate the drinking water for one week in every four to guard against outbreaks. It contains ronidazole at 1.2% w/v.
