Building work on the street, a dusty bridleway in August, a walk alongside a queue of traffic: there are plenty of places where the air at knee height, which is where your dog's nose lives, is a good deal worse than the air you are breathing standing up. A fitted mask with a filtering layer takes the coarse end of that out before it reaches the airways.

It is made from a soft non-woven fabric and sits over the muzzle on adjustable straps, with a one-way valve so that exhaled air has somewhere to go instead of building up warm and damp inside. That valve matters more for a dog than it does for a person, because dogs cool themselves by panting and anything covering the muzzle interferes with that. Be realistic about this one. A dog mask is not a fitted respirator and it will not seal to a muzzle the way one seals to a human face, so treat it as a barrier against coarse dust rather than against fumes, smoke or fine pollution. Never use it in warm weather or on a dog working hard, keep sessions short, watch the panting, and take it off at the first sign of distress.
