On who benefits most
Dengie pitch this particularly at ex-battery hens, who often prefer to snuggle on the floor rather than use a perch - a hen roosting normally will get less specific benefit from floor bedding than one spending most of its time down at ground level, though there is no reason it cannot be used generally.
Why we chose it
Being developed with the British Hen Welfare Trust rather than a generic straw maker gives this a specific credibility for exactly the hens most likely to need floor bedding rather than a perch. The faster composting is also a real practical saving if you are mucking out and using the waste on a garden.

Size guide & how to measure
A good bed lets your pet stretch out and curl up. Measure your pet nose-to-tail while they’re lying down, then add room to move.
How to measure
- Measure your pet from nose to base of tail while lying relaxed.
- Add roughly 15–25 cm so they can stretch out fully.
- For pets that like to curl, you can size down slightly for a snug, den-like feel.
| Size | Typical internal length | Rough guide |
|---|---|---|
| S | up to ~50 cm | Cats, toy & small breeds |
| M | ~50–70 cm | Small–medium dogs |
| L | ~70–90 cm | Medium–large dogs |
| XL | 90 cm + | Large & giant breeds |

Full description
Ex-battery hens in particular often prefer to settle on the floor of a coop rather than up on a perch, which means the floor bedding is doing more work for them than it would for a hen that roosts normally - and that is exactly the case Dengie make for developing this bedding with the British Hen Welfare Trust rather than a generic straw product.
It is a chopped, dust-extracted straw, which Dengie say composts more quickly than shavings or wood pellets once it is cleared out. The straw also carries pine oil, which Dengie describe as having anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, aimed at keeping the coop floor in better condition between full cleans.

Who it's for: keepers of rescued or ex-battery hens who spend time on the coop floor, and anyone who wants bedding that composts faster once mucked out.
