The turtleneck is the part that earns its keep. A jumper stopping at the shoulders leaves bare the one place a small dog actually loses heat, and a short-coated terrier standing in a cold hall tucks its chin in first. A rolled collar covers the throat and the base of the neck, which is also why this style stays put on the dog instead of being shrugged backwards over the shoulders.

It is knitted from acrylic rather than wool, and for a dog that is usually the better choice: acrylic does not felt in the machine, it dries quickly after a wet walk, and it does not tempt a chewer the way wool can. Six designs are made - red and grey reindeer, navy snowflake, red puppy, red wave and grey maple leaf - and the knit is identical in all of them, so choose on the pattern alone.

Check the measurement first. The maker sells this by number and publishes no chest or back-length table behind those numbers, which is the commonest reason pet knitwear goes back. Measure your dog's back from the collar to the base of the tail and the chest girth just behind the front legs, send us the two figures, and we will measure the garment itself before it leaves us rather than guess from a size label.

Who it's for: short-coated small dogs - Italian Greyhounds, Jack Russells, Chihuahuas, Miniature Dachshunds - who feel December indoors and need the neck covered as much as the back.
