Pet coats and jumpers are sized mainly by back length, with chest girth as a second check. Back length matters most for coverage.
How to measure
- Back length: measure along the spine from the base of the neck (collar area) to the base of the tail.
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, behind the front legs.
- If the two measurements suggest different sizes, choose by back length and allow for the chest.

Full description
The first place a short-coated dog feels the cold is the throat and the front of the chest, and that is the exact area most dog jumpers leave wide open at the neck. A rolled collar closes it. For a whippet or a greyhound stood still while you talk to somebody at the gate, the difference between an open neckline and a roll neck is the difference between shivering and settling.
It is knitted in wool, which is the warmer fibre for a given thickness and holds a good deal of that warmth even when it is damp, unlike cotton. The trade-off is care rather than performance: wool felts if it is washed hot, so cool water and drying flat will keep the shape far longer than a machine cycle will. It is a jumper for a dog who wears clothes willingly rather than one who chews them off.
