A parrot in a small cage with a bland diet is one of the more common causes of feather plucking and repetitive behaviour, which is why enrichment in a seed mix usually means variety of shape and texture as much as it means nutrition.

This mix runs to fourteen separate ingredients — red maize, spirulina pellet, red dari, flaked peas, flaked maize, popcorn maize, oats, white and black sunflower seeds, redskin peanuts, naked oats, buckwheat, white pumpkin seeds, chillies, extruded wheat, sultanas, coloured extruded wheat, banana chips, pineapple, papaya and pine nuts. The spirulina pellet, which Bucktons brand as Spiralife, is enriched with calcium and a range of vitamins and minerals, alongside its stated benefit for plumage and immune and digestive function.
