Full description

A parakeet given a seed mix will often just eat the sunflower seeds and leave the rest in the bowl, which is the reason a formulated complete food matters more than a bag labelled "seed mix".

This is Beaphar's XtraVital, described as a complete food for parakeets of all ages, led by seeds at 45.75% millet with bakery products, cereals, minerals and a small proportion of dried echinacea (0.6%) and egg derivatives (0.14%). Beaphar's feeding guide is up to 7.5g over 24 hours for a parakeet weighing up to 50g.

Complete food for parakeets of all ages, per Beaphar
Seeds including 45.75% millet
Echinacea at 0.6%, egg derivatives at 0.14%
Crude protein 14.4%, fat 7.3%, fibre 6.5%, ash 4.2%
500G bag, feed up to 7.5g per 24 hours for a 50g bird

On feeding amounts. Beaphar's own guide is banded by the bird's own weight — up to 7.5g over 24 hours for a parakeet weighing up to 50g — so weighing the bird, not just guessing from its size, is what makes that figure useful. No guide is given for parakeets over 50g on this card.

Who it's for: parakeet owners wanting a complete, formulated food rather than a plain seed mix a bird can pick through.

Beaphar XtraVital Complete Parakeet Bird Food

Why we chose it

A formulated complete food solves the actual problem with seed mixes, which is a bird eating only its favourite bit and leaving the rest. The small proportion of echinacea and egg derivatives is Beaphar's own addition rather than something we can independently vouch for beyond what's on the label.
