Chewing does most of the work in keeping a dog's teeth clean between brushes, which is really the mechanical case for any dental chew, rice-based or otherwise, rather than a specific ingredient doing something magic.

These are made from rice flour, glycerine, cellulose powder, dried brewers yeast, lecithin and salt, shaped into 11cm bones. They're low in fat, at 1.5% crude fat, with 5% crude protein, 1% crude fibre and 8.5% crude ash, and are gluten-free and sugar-free. Antos suggest them as a snack rather than a meal replacement, note that colour can vary as they're a natural-leaning product, and recommend supervising your dog while it chews.

• Gluten-free and sugar-free
• Suitable from 12 weeks old
• Colour may vary between batches

One thing worth knowing. The dental benefit here is the chewing action itself rather than a specific active ingredient — there's no enzyme or plaque-control additive listed, just a low-fat, gluten-free rice base shaped to be gnawed on. If your dog swallows chews quickly rather than working on them, the mechanical benefit is reduced.

Who it's for: owners looking for a low-fat, gluten-free dental chew for a dog from 12 weeks old, particularly useful if wheat or gluten is something to avoid.
