A muzzle is not an admission that your dog is dangerous. Vets ask for them routinely, some breeds are required to wear one in public, and a great many owners use one simply because their dog eats things off the pavement that later cost a fortune at the surgery. What matters is whether the dog can still breathe properly while it is on, and that is entirely down to the design.

This is the case for a basket over a fabric sleeve. A closed nylon muzzle holds the mouth shut, which stops a dog panting, and panting is how dogs cool themselves, so those are safe only for a few minutes at a time. An open plastic basket lets the dog pant fully, take water, and even take a treat through the gaps, which is what makes it wearable for a whole walk.

• Open basket construction, so the dog can pant and drink
• Padded head strap carrying reflective detail
• Strap adjusts for a secure fit
• Six sizes, listed NO.1 through NO.6
• Available in black, red or yellow
• Weight ranges from 66g to 248g depending on size

On sizing, and on getting it accepted. The size numbers do not map onto breeds, so measure your dog's snout length and its circumference and send us the figures rather than guessing from a chart. Then introduce it slowly, feeding through the basket over several days. A muzzle forced onto a dog in one go becomes a thing they fight every single time it appears.

Who it's for: Dogs who scavenge on walks, need one at the vet, or are required to wear one in public.
