Size guide & how to measure
Harnesses are sized by the chest (girth) — the measurement around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.
How to measure
- Stand your dog up squarely.
- Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs.
- Keep two fingers under the tape so the fit is snug, not tight.
- If your dog is between sizes, choose the larger one.
| Size | Typical chest / girth | Rough guide |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 28–40 cm | Toy breeds, very small dogs |
| S | 38–53 cm | Small dogs (e.g. Dachshund, Yorkie) |
| M | 50–68 cm | Medium dogs (e.g. Cocker Spaniel, Beagle) |
| L | 65–85 cm | Large dogs (e.g. Labrador, Boxer) |
| XL | 82–105 cm | Giant breeds (e.g. German Shepherd, Rottweiler) |
Ranges are approximate and vary by style. Always check this product’s Specifications for its exact measurements.
Full description
Colour is usually the first thing chosen on a harness and the least important thing about it - what actually decides whether a harness works is whether it fits the dog's girth properly and whether the dog will tolerate putting it on in the first place.
The Ancol Viva Step In Harness answers the second part by having the dog step through rather than go over the head, and carries a reflective strip for visibility on darker walks. It comes in blue or pink, and Ancol confirm the Large size specifically fits a 54-60cm girth, with XS, S, S/M and M also in the range.
- Step-in design - the dog steps through rather than ducking under
- Reflective strip for low-light visibility
- Girth sizes from XS through to Large
- Large fits 54-60cm girth specifically
- Available in blue or pink
What decides the fit. The colour is a preference; the girth measurement is not. Measure your dog around the chest, just behind the front legs, and match that number to the size range rather than picking a size because it "looks about right" against another harness you own.
Who it's for: owners who want the Viva range specifically in blue or pink, and are prepared to measure their dog's girth properly rather than guess a size from a previous harness.

Why we chose it
The Viva range is a proven step-in design, and having it available in blue and pink gives an actual colour choice rather than the black-only option a lot of budget harnesses default to. It's stocked here for owners who specifically want that lighter colour option in a design that already works.
