Size guide & how to measure
Leads are chosen by length and width rather than your dog’s body size. Pick the width to suit your dog’s strength and the length to suit how you walk.
How to measure
- Width: lighter, narrower webbing for small dogs; wider, thicker webbing for strong pullers and larger dogs.
- Standard lead (1.2–1.5 m): everyday pavement walks and training.
- Long line (3–10 m): recall practice and open spaces.
- Short / traffic lead (under 1 m): close control in busy areas.
| Length | Best for |
|---|---|
| Under 1 m | Traffic / close control |
| 1.2–1.5 m | Everyday walks (most popular) |
| 1.8–2 m | Relaxed walks, more freedom |
| 3 m + | Recall training, open spaces |
Always check this product’s Specifications for its exact length and width.
Full description
A lead that only reflects light from one angle is barely more visible than one that doesn't reflect at all, which is why how the reflective thread is worked into the strap matters more than whether it's there.
This is Ancol's reflective lead from the Viva range: poly-weave webbing with reflective weave running through it, finished with leather detailing and a satin-finish snap hook. It's 1.07m long and 12mm wide, rated to a maximum recommended weight of 50kg, and built for wet walks and swimming as well as dry ones.
- 1.07m long, 12mm wide
- Poly-weave webbing with reflective weave woven through
- Satin-finish snap hook, leather finishings
- Maximum recommended weight 50kg
- Weatherproof, suitable for swimming
- Available in Black, Blue and Red
On the name. This is sold as a "Rope Lead", but the material description Ancol give us is poly-weave webbing, not a twisted rope construction — treat "Rope" here as the name of Ancol's product line rather than a literal description of what it's made from.
Who it's for: owners wanting a lead visible in low light without buying a separate clip-on reflective strip, for dogs up to 50kg, in a choice of three colours.

Why we chose it
The reflective weave built into the strap itself outlasts a stitched-on strip, which is the reason to stock it over a cheaper plain lead. Three colours in the same construction also makes it easy to offer a choice without holding three different lead designs.
