Size guide & how to measure
Leads are chosen by length and width rather than your dog’s body size. Pick the width to suit your dog’s strength and the length to suit how you walk.
How to measure
- Width: lighter, narrower webbing for small dogs; wider, thicker webbing for strong pullers and larger dogs.
- Standard lead (1.2–1.5 m): everyday pavement walks and training.
- Long line (3–10 m): recall practice and open spaces.
- Short / traffic lead (under 1 m): close control in busy areas.
| Length | Best for |
|---|---|
| Under 1 m | Traffic / close control |
| 1.2–1.5 m | Everyday walks (most popular) |
| 1.8–2 m | Relaxed walks, more freedom |
| 3 m + | Recall training, open spaces |
Always check this product’s Specifications for its exact length and width.
Full description
Most leads are built for one job - the standard walk - and a training session or a nervous dog that needs more room ends up making do with whatever length happens to be in the drawer. Having a genuinely longer option changes that from a workaround into a choice.
Ancol's Padded Nylon lead lines the handle with soft, breathable neoprene and finishes with a satin-metal trigger hook. This page covers four combinations of width and length in raspberry, running from a standard everyday lead up to a considerably longer option for training or extra room.
- Neoprene-lined handle for grip and comfort
- Satin-finish metal trigger hook
- Four width and length combinations, in raspberry
- Durable, weather-proof nylon construction
- The shortest, narrowest option measures 1m x 12mm, rated to a maximum recommended weight of 20kg
On the longer and wider options. Ancol's published measurement and weight rating - 1m x 12mm, 20kg maximum - is for the shortest, narrowest lead on this page. They do not repeat separate figures for the wider or longer versions, so match your dog's size to the general step up in width and length rather than a specific published number for each.
Who it's for: owners who want more length than a standard lead offers - for training, recall work, or just extra room on a quiet walk - alongside the padded comfort of the neoprene handle.

Why we chose it
Having a genuinely longer option in the same range means we can offer more than one length without switching to a completely different lead design. The neoprene handle is still the detail that makes it worth the extra over a plain nylon lead.
